MONKEY ISLAND
The Panama Canal is a vital waterway that connects the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean, crossing the Isthmus of Panama. This region is known for its rich biodiversity, which includes a wide variety of plant, bird, mammal, and reptile species. The canal basin, encompassing Gatun Lake and surrounding areas, is home to numerous species of flora and fauna. The main attraction that delights both children and adults are the monkeys and sloths.
Monkey Island, located in Gatun Lake, is one of the most popular attractions for nature lovers. Although technically not an island because it emerged when Gatun Lake was created by damming the Chagres River, it has since become a safe haven for various wildlife species. Visitors can observe three of the four types of monkeys in the area: the white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus), the howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) in their natural habitat, and the Geoffrey's tamarin (Saguinus geoffroyi).
The island is accessible only by boat, ensuring a unique and respectful experience with nature.
